Black and White Surfaces (2017)

Artist’s Statement / Note

This work was created for, and inspired by, the conceptual framework proposed in Empathic Park—an art exchange project initiated by a group of MFA students from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China. Centered on the notions of transposition and empathy, the project offers a point of departure for further exchange of ideas and creative practices. To be empathic, in general terms, is to relate oneself to another across varying circumstances. The perceptual shift involved—the process of gaining awareness and alternative understanding—is what I have found particularly compelling. This conceptual work constitutes my artistic response to broader notions of transposition and empathy, extending beyond what the project may have initially proposed. To leave space for individual interpretation, I refrain from further explanation, in the hope that the work will stand on its own and speak for itself.
